    The absence/ minimal level of funding dedicated to the sector during the recent past has led to no fisheries/aquaculture research being undertaken in the country over the last 15 years, prevented the Fisheries Research Centre (established within the National Academy of Sciences in ) from becoming operative, and ensured a number of.   In addition to ongoing discussions of the issue at the WTO, the upcoming FAO technical consultation on subsidies in the fisheries sector and how they affect overcapacity, overfishing and IUU fishing, provides a potential opportunity to make progress on this issue.
